As per our mandate to “promote permaculture as a means to increase environmental sustainability, food security, and improved nutrition throughout Malawi ” Kusamala participated in a two day training workshop on Regional Food Security organized by Local and Global Action for Food Security in Africa (LAGAFA). The training workshop took place at Sheila’s Lodge in Lilongwe from the 12th – 13th, September 2012. The training drew a wide range of participants from different non-governmental organizations (NGOs) across the country that are members of the Civil Society Agricultural Network (CISANET) in Malawi. The NGO members where basically being trained on how to undertake policy analysis.
This training helps non-governmental organizations including Kusmala to engage government on issues of policy renegotiations. Policy issues raised by the non-governmental organizations are presented to government through the CISANET platform and even taken further to international levels through the platform of the Food Agriculture and Natural Resource Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN). This training also helped to built a better understanding of the different international and local agricultural policies such as the Comprehensive Agricultural Africa Development Programme (CAADP) and Malawi’s Agricultural Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp) which is a localized CAADP concept.
